Fleetwood Mac Decides the '04 Elections

It struck me as a thunderbolt as I was listening to "Rumours" why Gore lost the election. If you recall, the theme song of the Democratic Party Convention was none other than "Don't Stop". You remember, "Don't stop thinking 'bout tomorrow. Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone." The song is clearly about someone who's fucked up in the past. The only solace is that things can be better in the future. (Sidebar: It's specifically Lindsey Buckingham's take on his failed relationship with Stevie Nicks.) As the balloons rained down on Gore with this song blaring through our tv sets, the subconscious of millions of people watching who happened to have had this song drilled in their heads during the 70's were linking the thought of "failure" with the image of Gore and thinking a fresh start, a better tomorrow, sounds good. That inevitably led the unthinking "undecideds" to Bush. Great song, but a poor choice as a theme for an incumbent V-P running for President.
