Stoner spent the last hour developing a slow-afternoon-at-work crush on jazz trio leader & noise-rock guitarist Mary Halvorson. Check out the myspace pages of her various bands for some evil-sounding guitar and more fetching snapshots.
A review of a performance of her band, People: "Explosion drum is good and female vocal is good and when this music continues to listen to, suddenly that wonder that poisoned magic shoots... MYSTERY CANNOT BE SOLVED." -- Rockin' On (Japan)
Her explanation of her Trio's album title, "Dragon's Head": I’ve been studying astrology for a long time, and an astrological concept which has particularly interested me recently are the Nodes of the Moon: North Node and South Node, Rahu and Ketu, Dragon’s Head and Dragon’s Tail. The nodes are not planets-- they are the points in the sky where the moon’s orbit intercepts the ecliptic. In astrology, the Nodes are often associated with Karma. The South Node deals with origins and karmic past while the North Node refers to the future. The placement of the North Node in each individual’s chart shows a path which does not come naturally and involves hard work, but if accomplished, will bring the individual the most satisfaction in their lifetime. This is also said to be involved with fulfilling karmic debts. My north node falls in the tenth house of career, in Leo. Career is not an easy path for me; throughout my life and to this day there are constantly things to overcome and work towards. As a child I was deathly shy, and scared of performance, just as an example. To me, putting out my first album as a leader was very much tied in with this idea of the North Node, career and karma. There are also specific progressions happening right now in my chart which put emphasis on my North Node during this time period. Another reason why I chose this title was that it fit well with the drawing I wanted to use on the album cover. It is a drawing from a postcard that my father mailed me in 1999 from Italy. Under the drawing he had written “Saw a three headed man sitting on a wall. Couldn’t sneak up on him.” I thought the drawing of the three-headed man was interesting because (1) the three headed man is a nice representation of a trio working together as one; (2) the three-headed man seems very dragon-like; and (3) my father’s support and encouragement of what I am trying to do with my life has always been very important to me. Finally, to bring it back to astrology again, my North Node is conjunct (in the same part of the sky as) my father’s Mercury (short interpretation: he understands what I am trying to do). So all the pieces somehow fit together, which is a karmic notion in itself!
How many "jazz cigarettes" does one need to smoke in order to appreciate this music, Stoner?
I'm slowly cleaning up the archives to make searching easier, e.g., combining all Deep Blues years into one tag, all Summit years into one, etc., and eliminating other tags that are not useful. (Uhmm... "Grover Cleveland"?)
