Requiescat in pace
Everyone associated with Borders will have their own marker for the beginning of the end, but, for those who remember it, the decline began with the decision to do away with the book test, famously handed to anyone who asked for a job application. Here's the version I took in 1994.

Sorry for the poor image quality. The original document was typewritten decades ago. It existed in samizdat on mimeographed copies for years, which were later Xeroxed. A friend sent me a scanned photocopy as a pdf. file. It was scanned upside-down. I rotated it,and photographed it on my laptop screen with my cellphone camera. And you thought the Cold War was over.
