Summit 2012, Part 1

Bad, bad men.

Asked about my upcoming trip to the Twin Cities, I said I was going to a semi-annual blues-music festival featuring musicians inspired by the sounds of the juke joints of the North Mississippi hill country.

The response was uniform: “And you’re going where for this?”

Rex picked me up at the airport, set me on his shoulder and stomped across town.

There’s always been a certain disparity there, sure, but I thought this year’s event – three days at a BBQ shack!* – might put at least some of that to rest. Instead, it offered a moment that probably defines the difference between the scenes.

Chris rolled out the red carpet for Rex.

We were taking a break from the music with some plates of food on the outdoor patio when the door to the indoor stage banged open and eight or ten male festivalgoers spilled out, as if exiting a space invaded by angry hornets.
“What’s happening?” someone on the porch asked.

“They’re…dancing in there!”

*It's a pretty swanky BBQ shack.

Deep Blues Festival 2011

Apparently, this is as close to an official torch-passing from Chris Johnson as we'll see, and the Festival is moved to Rex Otto's old stomping ground of Cleveland, OH on July 16th.

Unfortunately, this is one long night in a bar (above), and not a return to our beloved open-air BYO Deep Blues Fests 1 & 2.

It's not the Deep Blues Festival, but there's deep blues in Minneapolis July 18th to 25th. Palmer's Bar and The Cedar will have a week long event with Deep Blues bands. More details to follow. Bands interested in performing can send me a message and I'll put you in touch with the right people.

A Well-Lit Portrait

The Reverend Deadeye performed "This Little Light of Mine," and the clouds parted for the only time during the Deep Blues Festival. "It's a miracle!" the Reverend crowed from the stage. I snapped this shot of Feral Boy, then the Reverend launched into one of his beloved originals -- "Fuck The Devil" -- and the clouds curled over the sun once more.
