George Saunders' essay collection The Braindead Megaphone includes a great travel piece on his visit to Dubai, "The New Mecca".
The titular essay is also pretty terrific, and his appreciation of Donald Barthelme had me digging out my copies of Sixty Stories and The Teachings of Don B.
