Summit 2008

A thoroughly entertaining travel piece in the April issue of Outside has got me thinking about a trip to Iceland before the Deep Blues fest.

Iceland is the most expensive country in Europe to visit, and getting there is not cheap (north of a grand, last I checked), but it is also utterly unique and I believe if one were to travel en masse (to share car-rental, etc) and camp out instead of splurging on hotels he would not incur ridiculous expense. Geysers, midnight sun, and kæstur hákarl all await us. Iceland Air flies out of Minneapolis, and since you'll be there anyway (for Deep Blues!) it's a no-brainer, yeah?

The article by Wells Tower, "Meltdown", was not available online when I checked but is really worth digging up.

BTW, I just checked icelandair.com and found the cheapest fare in that part of Juy is $982: departing July 8-11, returning July 18 (arriving 5:55pm).

I would love to go, but I can't this year. I'm cash constrained and trying to figure out where all of the people who appear with me on my income tax statement are going to live and sleep at the moment. I read this article incidentally. I really want to go Iceland. I've been idly thinking that maybe an industry conference (thermal power, electric cars) could provide me cover to go on somebody else's dime. You guys should go.

I've been thinking about going to Iceland for awhile, as part of a larger Scandinavinian tour. It just doesn't seem to be the best time to go, with the dollar in the tank and all.

But I did pick up Deep Blues Fest tix. Minnesota's kind of like Scandinavia.
