Feral Boy and Friday (as I will, from now on, refer to her) spent four days backpacking the Kalalau Trail, which roughly parallels the Na Pali Coast of Kaua'i through the steamy jungle (bearing wild mango, guava, and lime) and along treacherous cliffs (that is the trail angling up from lower left in the photo below), from where we could catch glimpses of the cool, yet unreachable, ocean below us.
The end of the trail held a beautiful, secluded beach where we slept beneath this sea grape tree.
We arrived back to our rental mini-van to find that most of our belongings had been stolen, the thieves having smashed a side window with a tree limb. We spent the afternoon filing a police report and obtaining a replacement vehicle (which was also our sleeping quarters for the remainder of the trip).
The next day we kayaked 17 miles along the Na Pali coast, going beyond the section that is possible to hike, for a different perspective. We lunched at another great beach, accessible only by water.
Later in the week, we joined a dive boat for a trip to the "forbidden" isle of Ni'ihau for three tanks-worth of exquisite wall diving. We saw crazy amounts of fish, a viper moray, white-tip oceanic sharks, monk seals, and other endemic animals.
Back on Kaua'i, we day-hiked Waimea Canyon (the "Grand Canyon" of the Pacific). Other days were spent exploring tidal pools and snorkeling near-shore reefs, where on the last day we came across enormous sea turtles.
My point being that, for the last couple weeks, my life has been better than yours. Peace out.
