Summer's Last Hurrah

In a panic over the close of summer vacation, Friday and I drove 5 1/2 hrs to Durango, Colorado, slept overnight in the car, then took a coal-fired steam engine locomotive along the Animas River to its confluence with Needle Creek, where we disembarked and then hiked six hours into Chicago Basin. We spent the next two days climbing four peaks, each of them over 14,000 ft, and then packed out the following day.
